Nintendo has revealed it is cutting the prices of its Wii console across the world.
The console manufacturer also told the BBC it would slash prices by 20 percent in the US and Japan and also implement a trade price cut in the UK and Ireland, although the consumer price will be "determined by retailers themselves".
"Our aim has always been to expand the gaming population and there are still many more people out there who have not yet experienced the fun of video games," said Nintendo.
The price of the console was raised by £20 this year to £199, due to the depreciation of the pound. However most retailers currently sell the Wii for £179.
High-street retailer Debenhams said the console was among the top 20 most requested gifts on wedding lists.

A price cut right now is the perfect thing to do. It will coincide with the new Wii Sports Resort bundle and the release of New Super Mario Bros for Wii, making a great Fall lineup. What Nintendo needs to do now is online promotions, like Microsoft does. This one here, see link for details, is good, but Nintendo should do more like these for individual names to get the Brand out there to the Internet population.
